It seems most oncologists don't want you to give up on your estrogen blockers so they advise a holiday. Has anyone been told this is not a good idea by their dr?
I'm no expert but I think that it's best to stay on the meds consistently, especially if you're handling the side effects. However, I read about a medical study comparing results (disease progression or recurrence) of women who took "holidays". I think the results were similar between the two groups but I can't be sure.
I quit Tamoxifen after 18 months (took a 3 month holiday and never resumed). I had my ovaries out and refused aromatase inhibitors.
My oncologist put it this way....you take the aromatose inhibitors to block the production of estrogen and progesterone which cause ER-PR positive cancer. If you take a holidaythe Meds can’t do their job. He also shared results from a study that indicated women’s who take their AI’s 90%+ of the time have significantly less reoccurrence.
I hate the side effects, but I surely don’t want the cancer back!
I took anti-hormonal medication for 4.5 years and stopped. I looked at my situation. I no longer see my oncologist, I go to my women's health provider instead.
I read the same study as @A MyBCTeam Member.
