Great question to be thinking about ahead of time — your skin will thank you later! Starting to moisturize *before* radiation begins can really help protect your skin as treatment progresses.
The general guidance is to look for fragrance-free lotions, creams, or ointments designed for sensitive skin. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Look for "fragrance-free" on the label (not just "unscented," which can still contain masking fragrances)
- Avoid products containing hydrocortisone or hormones unless your doctor specifically recommends them
- Popular brands mentioned by MyBCTeam members include Aquaphor, CeraVe, Eucerin, and Aveeno
- Apply moisturizer generously and consistently — don't wait until your skin starts showing changes
- Always rinse off any lotion before your radiation session One MyBCTeam member shared this helpful tip: "Use the lotions generously. Be sure to wash them off before treatment, and apply them as soon as possible afterward. Don't wait to start using them — if you wait till you think you need them, it's too late."
That said, your radiation oncologist or care team is the best person to recommend specific products suited to your skin, so it's always worth asking them directly before starting.

Hello! I asked this same question before my radiation and several great ladies recommended this salve. It is healing salve by Lancaster farmacy. I started using it before radiation and continued to use it after radiation. It worked beautifully for me.
I wish you much success with your treatment and Hope radiation is a breeze!
