Looking for some guidance from those who’ve walked this road. I’ve been assigned to a locum oncologist, and I’m feeling uneasy — like I might begin this chapter with someone who won’t stay through the whole story. If you’ve had a temporary doctor start your treatment, how did it go? Did you stay with them or ask for someone permanent? I’d appreciate any wisdom.
The thing is, doctors leave a practice for many reasons, at any time. Perhaps you can go ahead and meet with this doctor and see how comfortable you feel with him. You can always ask- how long are my treatment protocols expected to last? And, I hope you don't mind me asking, but do you anticipate being my oncologist throughout that time frame? They may not have an answer themselves, but the fact that they have them there filling in, means two things- the practice realizes they are understaffed, and that they were not going to push additional patients onto the other oncologists. Who knows, maybe this is a way to find out if this doctor would be a good fit for the practice! Keeping you in prayers! Hugs!
I’m meeting with a radiologist this week and just found out she’s retiring in June. Not very comfortable dealing with her and then a new person in June. I’d wait for the new person but the receptionist told me I HAVE to be seen within so many weeks after diagnosis —“it’s protocol”!! I will go to the appointment because I’m anxious to know whatever information they can give me— but am not committing to anything yet. (Am in a rural area but will travel for a second opinion if I need to)
I think feeling comfortable with your doctor is of utmost importance.
Thankfully I have been blessed with my oncologist throughout my journey. I wouldn't know what to do if she ever left. I couldn't imagine having to start over with someone who doesn't know me or has helped me with what I've been through. I am nervous about that happening since there is talk about her leaving with her new contract negotiations with Jefferson. It scares me. So yes, I would not want a temporary oncologist. I feel it's important for continuity and my mental and emotional well-being to have my oncologist see this to the end. So would you. Good luck and I hope you can find a permanent oncologist that can guide you through the process. Hugs! 🙏❤️
How do you navigate working with a temporary (locum) oncologist when starting breast cancer treatment?
Your concerns about continuity of care are completely valid. While the search results don't specifically address locum oncologists, they do highlight what makes a strong doctor-patient relationship work.
