Wondering about side effects.

I had Herceptin with Perjeta and chemo for 6 cycles, every 3 weeks. I had nausea, diarrhea and extreme fatigue, but all of that was from the chemo. I am now doing Herceptin and Perjeta only, no chemo. No problems at all.

Herceptin by itself has no side effects really. Yes in a small percentage of women it can affect the heart, but it’s usually in a metastatic setting with prolonged use. HOWEVER, when combined with chemo, it can have an exponential effect on the heart. IMO it’s mostly because of the chemo. Read my story. You can do it without the chemo! More and more hospitals are following the study design my doctors followed, successfully. I was able to travel and have fun between my Herceptin and Perjeta iv’s.

Herceptin (trastuzumab) is a widely used and often life-saving treatment for HER2-positive breast cancer. While many people tolerate it well, it's important to be aware of potential side effects.

Common side effects reported by MyBCTeam members include:
• Body aches and weakness
• Numbness and tingling sensations
• Fatigue
• General discomfort One important consideration is that Herceptin can affect heart function. Your healthcare team will monitor your heart regularly throughout treatment. If any heart changes are detected, they may:
• Adjust your treatment plan
• Prescribe heart medications to help
• Discuss lifestyle modifications like diet and exercise

Remember that while side effects can occur, the benefits of Herceptin often outweigh the risks for many patients. Always communicate any concerns or new symptoms with your healthcare team during treatment.
