A hysterectomy won't stop your body from producing estrogen if you are not already menopausal. You would need to have your ovaries removed which would cut down on estrogen production and immediately put you into menopause. Even if you do that your body will still produce estrogen, but less than it did before menopause. There are also drugs that can stop your ovaries from working, but once again your body will still produce some estrogen.
What really infuriates me is what cancer sites say about all the wonderful advances made in the last 25 years. Could have fooled me. More pain drugs, more drugs added to chemo to thwart nausea and more machines to take images. If that is what some consider great advances then they don't expect much. With all the money thrown into research, we should have had many advancements, including eliminating mastectomy and chemo altogether. Women are at the mercy of a system going nowhere. People are hoping for cures but if we can't even get better treatments we sure as hell won't see a cure.
don't we all wish Luanne. It doesn't hurt to try, side effects reverse when stopped and there are 3 to choose from so if one is not being tolerated then there are others to try. I hope one day there are better treatments than what we have now. I fail to see any extraordinary gains when it comes to the treatment of breast cancer. Drugs and more drugs, all with side effects not tolerated by many. Women are still getting mastectomies, radiation, chemo and drugs. For those who claim treatments are better now, I beg to differ. Mastectomy is mastectomy. Chemo still makes women sick and sometimes their WBC are so low they have to go to the ER, Radiation still causes burns and drugs still cause bad side effects so hogwash about strides made. I don't see it.
It sure would be great if all it took was a hysterectomy to stop estrogen. I would think every women diagnosed with Breast cancer would get one.
Hysterectomy is only done for women who don't want to take Tamoxifen but if you are post menopausal your body is still producing estrogen through adrenal glands and body fat.
