Hi Denise--you and I share the same dilemma--dreadful "dog ears" after double mastectomy on January 5, 2023 (as if we haven't endured enough, correct?)! I decided at my age that I would not undergo any breast reconstruction and just live with going flat. And, I am very much at peace with my decision. However, when I looked in the mirror I felt as though I should get a job in a "circus side-show"--no kidding, that bad! However, I am here to tell you that there is hope! Have your breast surgeon refer you to a plastic surgeon (one who will work with your insurance provider) and do so "quickly--now" (even though you may not be ready to undergo another procedure until swelling goes down) for an "initial consultation". I say this because if your plastic surgeon provider is any thing like mine you may have to wait "several"--(6 months out for me) months to get on their surgery schedule. Unfortunately, most plastic surgeons do not prioritize breast cancer patients. But the good news is that in waiting for several months all the "initial" mastectomy swelling should be down and you'll be ready to get your "dog ears" chiseled away. I am now recuperating from my dog ear revision surgery (July 27, 2023) and everything is progression well. Both sides "match" and are reduced now and I feel and look SO much better. So happy to get those extra pillows under my arms gone!! Is it "perfect"--well, honestly--NO, but considering having no breasts what could look "perfect"? Unfortunately, cancer has taken perfection away from us. And perhaps this is the lesson we are to learn. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder and looking and feeling "better"--not perfect--is the objective for all of us! I will be re-evaluated toward the middle of September to see if I may need a little further "chiseling" but just looking at the results right now--I would say that I could live with this and just go on with my life. BTW--in case you did not know; because of legislative reforms, your insurance company MUST give you this cosmetic revision due to cancer at NO CHARGE. I didn't even have to make a co-pay for out patient surgery. However, you MUST be sure that your plastic surgeon "CODES" this procedure correctly (revision surgery due to cancer) to make sure you do not have any repercussions from your insurance company. Denise, I hope I have been of some help, inspiration and encouragement for you. You do not have to live with this dreadful dog ears!! I have silicone prosthetics. The brand I have are Anita. I also buy bras with pockets so they stay in place. The cotten cloth also helps to keep it comfortable. I have a boutique in my area of Florida. There are sites for prosthetics and bras. Jodee, ABC, and Anita. Silicone is heavier than fiberfill, but the weight helps to make them feel more natural. Also if you are caught in the rain. If you have your surgeon write a script for you insurance will pay for them. We are having a hurricane here tonight. Let me know if you have any questions. 💓

Denise--you're very welcome! Would you mind sharing the prosthetics you have? I haven't done that yet, as I wanted to wait until the dog ear revision was taken care of. I now feel comfortable going ahead with this but I have "no clue" what prosthetics to get (would like something very light--just to fill out my clothing) and have no idea a brand or what or where to look.
