I’m having a double mastectomy soon as well but I think they told me I had to stay overnight. I’d much rather go home so I’m hoping they change their mind! Best of luck to you!!

I had my DMX at an outpatient clinic in March 2023. My surgeon changed me to that since I was in good health, overall, and could go home right afterward. No need for inpatient, overnight care. Having had surgery for endometrial cancer the November before, and having to stay overnight then, which made more sense, I really appreciated going right home after recovery. Even walked into CVS with my hubby to get my pain med prescriptions before getting home. Easy peasy.

I had a couple of weeks between diagnosis and surgery, so I cleaned the house, made some meals and froze them, picked up menus from places we do take out, got all prescriptions filled. After surgery, I was not allowed to drive, do any vacuuming, etc. So prepping made it easier after surgery, and helped me use up the nervous energy before surgery. Move things to an easy to reach height, (no reaching above your head allowed at first). Get some comfy, soft, button up or zip up tops (I lived in my hoodies- lol!). The hospital gave me a small heart shaped pillow to go under my arm to keep pressure off the surgery site, as well as some mesh aprons to hold the drains. I was most comfortable sleeping upright. I took care of my drains myself (hubs doesn't do blood well) and it wasn't a problem. I am looking forward to your post that everything went well, and you are home resting comfortably. Hugs!

Thank you so much for the quick answer. Stupid things set me off and this one started running around me head like crazy. My husband - an excellent caregiver himself - thought it was probably something like that. Appreciate the suggestions too. 😀

I had bilateral mastectomy on October 6th in a surgery center in the same area as the hospital and yes after surgery and recovery I went home it took all of 4 hours from arrival to going home.
The way My surgeon explained it he can give me the same drugs at home they give in the hospital without having to catch extra germs from hospital stay.
The one suggestion I have is make sure you have someone at home to help you.
My husband was wonderful taking care of drains to help bathing and meal prep
