My breast specialist prefers to use the surgery center and NOT the hospital. As she puts it - I don't want you to catch an infection and die. We're using the surgicenter. I too had a room to myself with three nurses at my disposal overnight (my mastectomy was in the afternoon and I didn't leave recovery until like 8:30 that night). I was released the following morning.

To update everyone, I had my surgery October 3rd. Left mastectomy. It took about 2 hours including biopsy of sentinel nodes. They were negative so no lymph node packet was removed. I went home after about an hour in recovery. I am not having reconstruction yet either so nothing more was done.

I had 2 drains, one was removed the third day, the other at 8 days. As of today I am doing well and hoping to continue this path of recovery.

I had my surgery on 10/06/2016 I got Oncoplasty which used my own skin and healthy parts , it was longer than what they thought so 2 hour surgery was 6 hours kept me over night for observation and I think it was a very good idea. Its a big area and needs more time too be careful. After surgery they said something like 23 hours stay after is still out patient, now that I think about it , must have something to do with insurance!

I was told many people go home the same day but my surgeon likes to keep you for one night. I went home the next day. And I had bilateral.

Outpatient for me also. This was the easiest surgery. Was home in bed resting no other place to be.
