I just had my first bone scan and I have osteopenia at 51. I just started AIs a month ago. My doctor says insurance will only pay for a scan every 2 years but that sounds like a long time from now. Has anyone else gone from osteopenia to osteoporosis on AIs that fast, such that I should insist on a scan in a year?
Hi Karen,
I had a DEXA scan when I started on AI's. I had osteopenia. I had another DEXA scan a year later and I had full blown osteoporosis. You definitely need a scan sooner than every 2 years.
I had osteoporosis after being on Arimidex - have been on it since 2013. I get a Prolia shot every six months with no side effects and have seen improvement in my bone density. I get a scan every two years.
I have osteopenia and I am on Reclast once a year. I am getting ready for my second bone scan. I am doing mine every 2 years.
I worry about this too. My bone density scan was ok, but I am on Tamoxifen now. My oncologist wants to switch me to an AI by age 55, I’ll be 54 this year. Osteoporosis runs in my family too, so it makes me nervous to switch and be on one for 8 years.
I’d like to better understand how much more effective are AI’s to prevent a recurrence than Tamoxifen.
