I had genetic testing for 19 identified genes active in breast cancer - all negative. They also tested for the 2 genes active in melanoma due to family history - also negative. As Melissa said, I had to submit a family history of cancer diagnoses to be assessed in order to qualify for the testing at no direct cost to me. If I had been denied, I would have considered paying a private lab for the testing just to put my mind at ease as I have two daughters (and three sisters) who could have also been at risk.
I had the BRACA 1 and 2 tests done. I was not positive.
Where I live they won't test you unless you have one immediate family member with a history of BC, which I don't.
I was diagnosed last September at 37. I was tested for that and every other genetic cancer marker that is currently available to be tested, beast, colon, etc. I came back negative for every single one of them.
I have one sister that was also diagnosed (at 29) with pre-menopausal BC, however she passed away before the genetic testing. I was tested after I was diagnosed. I am neg for BRCA-1 and BRCA-2, but the APC gene came back. Since my father passed 4 days after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer with mets to his stomach, they added an annual colonoscopy to my screenings. Take care!
