I live on Maui, but will have reconstruction on Oahu next year. After my mastectomy on March 28, 2016 I had to stay on Oahu for 5 weeks before being allowed to fly back to Maui! I was very costly ! I do not know what to expect next year when I have the prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction ? For this reason I am considering taking a leave of absence from work and having surgery in California , because we have a home there. I had expanders put it during my bilateral mastectomy surgery. It was done in mid July and I was back to work at the start of September. It has been a year and a half since my surgery and 7 months since my implants were placed. I feel really good except for an occasional "ache". Good luck!
I had DIEP Procedure also.... and yes that's a long, long recovery time. I suffered for about 6 weeks also, could not stand up straight for 8 weeks....but here I am back to normal..my new normal...
I had a double mastectomy, DIEP procedure reconstruction, 28 lymph nodes removed and reduction all done on May 2, 2016 on a 16 hour surgery. I suffered horribly for 6 weeks in pain and didn't work for 4 months. Radiation/28 sessions finished on August 12 and I went back to work on Sept. 5. Mind you i was paid the whole time and really allowed myself to heal because i could. I don't think i could have gone back to work any sooner but that was me and lucky to be able to take that time off. Good luck. Take as much time as you need as it is not worth struggling and straining yourself.
I had a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction done in June. I went straight to silicone implants, no expanders were done. I was only off work for 2 1/2 weeks. Mind you, I work in an office so the most strenuous thing I do is lift a box of checks! I got my drains out after the 1st week, so they were no problem at all. I still go to physical therapy to work on the mobility issues with my right arm.
I had expanders placed during my mastectomy, and then once i was finished with chemo and radiation i had the expanders exchanged for implants (about 10 months after bilateral mastectomy).the exchange surgery was soooo easy compared to the mastectomy. I was only in the hospital for a few hours and went home that night feeling relatively good. There no drains were involved, and i I felt completely fine within days of the surgery. if your situation is similar to mine - a reconstruction where you exchange expanders for silicone implants - hopefully you'll be at home and feeling good very quickly.
