Does anyone have suggestions on how to deal with armpit discomfort? Wearing a bra is very uncomfortable. I had a single mastectomy about 6 weeks ago. Is it too soon?
When I had the single mastectomy, I attributed most of the discomfort to the mastectomy. Only after I had the other side removed did I realize my discomfort was more related to the sentinel node biopsy and nerve issues along my arm. I wore compression shirts (no bra) after the single mastectomy for almost 2 full months. When I was able to get my prosthesis, I used it with a mastectomy sports bra which was VERY snug and comfortable.
Hope that helps and hope you feel better soon!
Had this problem with my double mastectomy last January. For nerve pain I wet washcloths with cold water, rolled them up and held them under my arms, which worked well. That tingly, annoying pain was gone in 4-6 weeks but it was replaced with all kinds of other discomfort. Also just rolled up socks and held them under my arms. Thought tennis balls might help but I haven't tried them yet. Massage is helpful, particulary with thumbs (you need a buddy to do that) and your knuckles. I had myofascial release from a PT which was very helpful. Also used those foam rollers which are so popular now. After four months I have just started wearing simple stretchy bras. Those seem to be OK at least for a few hours. My pain is intermittent and random now but it took several months to reach that point. Hope you find relief soon. Be well.
I'm with coffeemommy. My underarm areas were the most difficult area with bras. I lived in soft camisoles with the shelf bra pockets until I had my second mastectomy and started reconstruction. Then I found soft sports bras with soft high sides that were easy on my now pouchy underarm areas (I think they are called Sassybax).
@A MyBCTeam Member - I came home in one from the hospital but the one that I purchased with room for my prosthesis was the Amoena 0658 Pocketed Mastectomy Performance Black Sports Bra.
Hope that helps!
I wouldn't wear a bra yet. Physical therapy in moderation really helps...and time.
