Has anyone every have skin breakdown after mastectomies.
Yes. They did a nipple sparing procedure on me, but this left paper thin skin @ the site. Within 3 days the tissue over my mastectomy became necrotic, and sloughed off. (nipple and all). It took 2 mo. for the wound to close. I think this was due to over-aggressive surgery and possibley the application of ice post-op.
I was very aggressive re: wound care, and though it looks like the face of the moon, it is healed over.
Oh god sounds like my story but luckily didn't lose my nipple. I put a hot pack on my ribs below my breasts and didn't feel that it touchbthe lower area. Turned into a 3 degree burn that didn't heal in 14 weeks. Total nightmare. Did hyperbaric 9 tone got burn down tomorrow two holes and had it surgically closed in April. Looks great now not bad at all considering. Having final recon in two weeks can't wait for this ordeal to end! Bottom line is don't use heat or ice! I learned the hard way! Also got cellulutis twice and admitted 5 days each time for vancomycin.
Speaking of nipples falling off; my husband and I went over the reconstruction process over and over. I at first thought seriously about having nipples done, and I am not convinced I am not doing it. While on the other hand, he wanted me to. I finally looked at him and said, they are the biggest failure in breast reconstruction, and I refuse to walk down the street and have some woman or man tap me on the shoulder and hand me my nipple. I finally got him to agree.
