I needed to lose weight before my diagnosis and I am anticipating nausea and sickness after chemo. How can I avoid gaining weight while trying to keep my stomach settled?

Weight loss during chemotherapy is actually quite common. Nausea, taste changes, and loss of appetite can all reduce how much you eat. So while it may not be the ideal way to lose weight, it's very possible that you won't gain during treatment.

That said, managing nausea while keeping nutrition on track is a real balancing act. Here are some tips that may help:

- Eat small, frequent meals rather than large ones
- Stick to bland, easy-to-digest foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast
- Avoid spicy, greasy, or very sweet foods — these can trigger nausea
- Eat your largest meal when you feel your best
- Choose room-temperature or cold foods if hot food smells bother you
- Stay well hydrated — water, ice chips, or flavored water can help A MyBCTeam member shared this helpful advice: "Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate before, during, and after the infusion, and eat something really good and substantial before the infusion."

After treatment, focusing on fiber-rich foods, lean proteins, and whole foods can help manage weight longer term. Always loop in your care team — they can help tailor a nutrition plan that works for both your stomach and your weight goals.

I have already lost my taste buds a few times mid-meals! And I am eating way smaller portions. Thanks for your reply!

A lot if people gain weight during chemo because of steroids.
Ask for a referral to an oncology dietician. Try to eat as healthy as you can, but sometimes you just to eat what you can tolerate. I wanted watermelon, Caesar salad, baked potatoes and macaroni salad from the deli. Stay hydrated.
Wishing you well!

For me I gained weight both times I had chemo courtesy of the steroids I was taking and the edema they caused.
