Hi ChleoD, Hope you are having a good morning.
I had unilateral DIEP flap reconstruction on March 31st,2026. I did not have to go on a special diet just the presurgery fasting the night before.
A few women on a Facebook Diep group mention that their surgeons had them go on weight loss prior to their surgery They had to get within a particular weight or BMI range. My understanding is that very high BMI or obesity can create wound healing complications not to mention other underlying risk factors that affect recovery and outcomes.
There were also women in the group who had to gain weight to reach an acceptable threshold to be a candidate.
Have you had a DIEP consult with a microsurgeon for candiadate evaluation ? Your Doctor can share more insight . Hugs

Are you asking about diet recommendations before or after DIEP flap breast reconstruction surgery?

The search results available don't specifically cover dietary guidelines for DIEP flap surgery. However, one key factor for being a good candidate is having enough abdominal fat, since that tissue is used to reconstruct the breast.

Here are a few general things worth knowing:

- Very thin individuals or those with low body fat may not have enough tissue for the procedure
- Weight fluctuations after DIEP flap surgery are generally easier to manage than with implants
- Your surgical team is the best resource for personalized nutrition guidance before and after surgery

It's always best to speak with your care team about any specific dietary needs tied to your surgery and recovery plan.
