I had unilateral DIEP flap reconstruction on March 31st,2026. I did not have to go on a special diet just the presurgery fasting the night before.
A few women on a Facebook Diep group mention that their surgeons had them go on weight loss prior to their surgery They had to get within a particular weight or BMI range. My understanding is that very high BMI or obesity can create wound healing complications not to mention other underlying risk factors that affect recovery and outcomes.
There were also women in the group who had to gain weight to reach an acceptable threshold to be a candidate.
