I packed my phone, charger, word search games (I started with a book, but found I could not remember what I was reading- so it was more of a frustration than help!), a paper pocket calendar take notes, checkbook, so I could pay something against that balance!!, my blanket, water bottle and some healthy snacks. Our center had snacks, but mostly cookies, chips, soda, etc. I did take the hard Gin-Gin candies to suck on as some of the meds when infused, would cause a weird taste in my mouth, and since Ginger is a natural tummy soother- win, win! Remember, this is just the first session, you will be able to bring your bag home and revise as needed for the next visit! Hugs and Good Luck!!

I had a chemo teach with the nurse navigator before my first chemo. Have a list of questions for her if you can think of any. Depending on your treatment ( mine was 4+ hours) pack a bag with tablet, charger(s), gum or hard candy - if you’re into that- a book to read or whatever you like. My infusion center has fruit, snacks, drinks…. I found I slept or was so groggy I couldn’t focus so played crosswords and other games. You’ve got this!💕

Getting ready for your first chemo treatment can feel overwhelming, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here's a helpful overview of what to consider before starting:

Medical & Health Prep
- Get up to date on vaccinations (flu shot, COVID-19) before chemo begins, as chemo weakens your immune system
- Visit the dentist and complete any dental work at least one month before starting, since dental issues can worsen during treatment
- Ask your doctor about birth control options if needed, especially if your cancer is hormone receptor-positive

At Home
- Stock your pantry with easy-to-prepare foods like frozen meals and ready-to-eat options
- Pre-cook and freeze meal-sized portions for low-energy days
- Buy a silk pillowcase and wide-tooth comb if you're preparing for potential hair loss
- Consider purchasing a wig or cold cap ahead of time if hair loss is expected Pack a Chemo Bag
Think of it like packing for a long flight! Bring things to keep you comfortable and entertained:
- Laptop, tablet, or phone (fully charged!)
- Books, magazines, or audiobooks with headphones
- Games, puzzles, or craft supplies
- Snacks, water, and a neck pillow
- Cozy blankets, socks, and comfortable clothing

Day-Of Tips
- Eat something before your infusion — nothing too heavy, but don't go in on an empty stomach
- Start hydrating the day before and the morning of your appointment
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing

As one MyBCTeam member put it, "Chemo isn't fun, but it is doable!" You've got this. 💪
