It's frustrating when you're looking for specific information and it just isn't there! Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is actually the second most common type of breast cancer, yet it tends to be under-researched compared to other types — so it's not surprising it was left out.

ILC recurrence rates depend heavily on a few key factors:

- Stage at diagnosis — ILC is often caught at later stages because it's harder to detect early, which can affect recurrence risk
- Hormone receptor status — About 95% of ILC tumors are estrogen receptor (ER)-positive, and around 70% are progesterone receptor (PR)-positive, which generally responds well to hormone-blocking treatments like tamoxifen
- HER2 status — ILC is rarely HER2-positive, but when it is (without ER or PR receptors), the outlook tends to be less favorable Because ILC is most often hormone receptor-positive, hormonal therapies can play a big role in reducing recurrence risk. Talking with your oncology team about your specific receptor status and stage is the best way to get a clearer picture of your personal recurrence risk and the steps you can take to lower it.
