Can tamoxifen cause tooth loss, and can vitamins or calcium prevent it?
Yes, tamoxifen can increase the risk of tooth loss. Research shows that using tamoxifen for more than one year is associated with greater tooth loss. This happens because hormonal therapy blocks estrogen's positive effects on dental health.
In one study of 140 breast cancer survivors taking tamoxifen, only three participants didn't lose any teeth during the study period. Factors linked with losing 12 or more teeth included:
* Longer tamoxifen use (more than one year)
* Age older than 65
* Less use of dental services
* Dry mouth
* Fewer cavities
Unfortunately, there's currently no evidence that dietary supplements, vitamins, or calcium can prevent tooth loss related to tamoxifen. The best approach is focusing on excellent oral hygiene and regular dental care.
To protect your teeth while on tamoxifen:
* Brush 2-4 times daily with fluoride toothpaste
* Floss once or twice daily
* Stay hydrated to combat dry mouth
* See your dentist regularly
* Address dry mouth symptoms promptly
Talk with your oncologist and dentist about your specific situation. They can help you develop a personalized plan to maintain your dental health during treatment.

Unfortunately Tamoxifen, AIs, and chemo can all cause damage to your teeth and gums. I've had 8 teeth break since 2022 when I had my first round of chemo and I was only able to afford to get one fixed with a crown since it was more important to pay for cancer treatments then it was to fix my teeth. I've had chemo twice now and lost 4 teeth with each round. I've recently started taking Letrozole and Ibrance and I'm concerned more will be breaking soon 😕 If you have dental coverage and/or can afford to go to the dentist then try your best to keep up with the tooth cleaning visits and ask your dentist if you should come in for more than 2 cleanings a year. Good luck ❤️
