OMG... YES!!! Freedom lol when those drains were removed. The blissful showers, it was great. My wounds healed pretty quickly.

It took a few days, but it definitely felt a lot better! I continued to move slowly when reaching up, etc. because before the drain was out, there were a few internal stitches holding it in place, and moving irritated where those were. But once the drains were out- I was immedatelyi more comfortable without that "pulling" sensation. And the drain free showers are the best!! It feels so good to finally feel squeaky clean all over! Definitely a mood booster to be able to shower and move around without always being conscious of the drain and its position. Enjoy the better days that are on the horizon!! Hugs!

How do you feel after having drains removed and stitches undone?

Most people feel relief once drains are removed, though you may still experience some tenderness and discomfort. Recovery varies, but many feel significantly better within a few days to a week after drain removal.

A MyBCTeam member shared: "Three days after lumpectomy surgery, I finally slept last night, so I'm feeling a little better today." Another described: "I've had three lumpectomies, and it wasn't too bad. Recovery was like a day or so. I was able to do everything I normally do after three days."

You might experience brief shooting pains or sensitivity as nerves heal, which is normal and typically improves within a few weeks. What is easy to wear during recovery?

Comfortable, supportive clothing makes a big difference:

- Supportive sports bras or breast binders (you may need a larger size due to swelling)
- Stretchy-waisted pants like yoga pants for easier dressing
- Jackets or cardigans with inside pockets (helpful if you still have drains)
- Soft, nonrestrictive clothing that doesn't irritate the surgical site

A MyBCTeam member recommended: "I was told to wear a sports bra. You may have to get a bigger size because of swelling."

Avoid underwire bras during initial recovery as they can cause discomfort and irritation. How long before wounds really heal?

The healing timeline varies:

- Skin typically heals in 2-3 weeks
- Stitches dissolve within up to 10 weeks
- Firmness and swelling can take up to 6 months to fully resolve
- Most people return to normal activities within 2 weeks, though some take longer

If you have radiation therapy afterward, additional healing time is needed. Be patient with your body and follow your care team's wound care instructions to prevent infection.

Contact your doctor if you notice prolonged pain, signs of infection (discoloration, swelling, oozing), or any concerning changes.
