Yes, some people who initially qualify for a lumpectomy choose to have a mastectomy instead for greater peace of mind. However, it's important to note that large-scale studies have shown that lumpectomy with radiation may actually offer better survival odds compared to mastectomy.

Sometimes additional surgery becomes necessary after a lumpectomy if doctors are unable to remove all cancer cells. About 20% of people need additional surgery after a lumpectomy. When making this decision, consider that:
• Mastectomies typically have a longer recovery time
• Mastectomies are more likely to cause ongoing issues like scarring, pain, and numbness
• Mastectomies eliminate the ability to produce milk
• While mastectomies may help avoid radiation-related side effects, some cases still require radiation therapy, especially if the tumor is large or has spread

The choice between procedures is best made as a shared decision with your cancer care team, taking into account your specific situation and preferences.

Hi, I had a lumpectomy in march ,second surgery 3 weeks later to get better margins in April and radiotherapy mid July 2023 for high grade dcis 27 mm.
April 2025 had a mastectomy as had a recurrence with 75mm high grade DCIS . Lymph nodes were clear.
I had got myself really fit that year going to the gym 3-4 times a week and doing high impact classes, and had lost a stone in weight. . Fittest I had been in years. I’m 61.
