Zometa infusion made my bone come though my gum on lower jaw.. now I have red irritated gum for several months.
Shannon, indeed get your oncologist to refer you. It should be treated as a side effect of the treatment by insurance company and thus should be covered. You need to insist on this. Go advocate for yourself, girl!

@A MyBCTeam Member Hi. I have necrosis of the lower jawbone from getting zometa infusions for a year. My bone is basically dead in my jaw. Once it started sticking through my gum it got bigger and finally part of it broke off. I've got to have oral surgery at a hospital. A maxifacial oral surgeon will go in and debris it and remove the dead bone. Then he will pack it with stem cells and close it up. My oncologist referred me to this surgeon, that way Medicare will pay for it because it was caused by a cancer fighting drug ,Zometa. It's also true that zometa remains in your body for a long time, years. It can cause problems further down the road. There's no guarantee that this surgery will stop it from happening again. I need to schedule my surgery soon!
The AI's don't cause this. It's the bone drugs that do.
