I had early stage cancer (stage1) and a positive margin with my mastectomy. It’s been almost 7 years now. I’m having back spasms for no obvious reason. Started two weeks ago. I also have groin pain (left side) that hurts as I walk. I’m going to reach out to my oncologist but I wonder if I’m overreacting. I have had the groin pain off and on for over a year. It comes and goes but has been consistent this time. I thought it was a pull related to some strengthening exercises that I got using a… read more
You're absolutely right to reach out to your oncologist about these symptoms. A MyBCTeam member shared that when experiencing new symptoms after treatment, it's best to consult your oncologist first rather than a general practitioner. They can order appropriate tests like bloodwork or scans to properly evaluate your Show Full Answer
@A MyBCTeam Member Palliative radiation doesn't always produce great results immediately . Radiation to my sternum had immediate results, radiation to my hip actually increased the ache I was having but after 2 months, no more ache at all. They call it a pain flare ( temporary worsening of bone pain in the treated metastatic site” )
Another lady also had Palliative radiation to her spine and then felt more pain in her hip that eventually went away.
I will add that like breast cancer lumps are hard to feel until they reach a certain size that seems to be how Breast cancer bone metastases is. I didn't feel my initial mets on my hip at first which was 2 cm July 2023 and 6 months later when it got to 2.5 cm I started to feel an ache and the ache became more constant but I still wouldn't call it painful. Then I had it radiated and its been stable for a year now.
Tonya, I just read your story and realize you did have more surgery to get clear margin and was on a hormone blocker for 4-5 years? You really should be okay as you will still have protection for some time after stopping the AI's. It says that if you take an AI for 5 years you will remain protected for 1-more years when you end treatment. I still think you should probably see your oncologist.
I really did think my groin/lower back pain was from the spine mets that was found in October .I thought it grew and was pressing on a nerve or something. But the radiologist said right before I had 3 radiation treatments to it that there wasn't any growth in 4 months and the lesion was actually in a good place that wouldn't affect any organs.
Hi Tonya, same here, my back & groin pain was okay when laying down but the pain getting up was unbearably excruciating.
It's probably nothing but instead of worrying about it until July, you might want to see if you can make an appointment with your oncologist soon. 2 more months of worrying isn't going to help you.
if you had a positive margin why didn't you have radiation ?
