I have Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, triple positive, grade 2, stage 2. Genetic testing- no cancer genes involved. I am currently doing neoadjuvant TCHP. I will finish chemo in June and then have a mastectomy. I have decided to have an Aesthetic Flat Closure. I am very torn about whether to remove only one breast or two. I am weighing all the pros and cons and am no closer to a decision. I would appreciate hearing about the experiences from others who have made the one/two breast decision… read more
I was 62 when diagnosed as HER2+, Stage 2, Grade 3, one tumor 2.7 cm. I decided on the aesthetic flat closure for the single mastectomy. The decision allowed me to skip radiation, which I considered a win, as there is a history of heart issues in the family, and my targeted drug (Herceptin) has the potential side effect of heart issues. Then the question, one or two. Doing both would be an easy way to be even on both sides, but it also means longer time under anesthesia, additional risk of infections/complications, additional drains to deal with. I decided to just do the single mastectomy. I healed without complications, and am now 5 years post active treatment, and so far- so good! I just pop a prosthetic in and roll on with my life!
Reach out if you have any questions- Wishing you all the best as you make the decisions that are right for you! Hugs!
It's ok to shed tears, it just makes room for better things!
DeeBee3,
Thank you so much for sharing. It helps me to prepare, hearing other people’s journeys.
it's been 3 months since surgery and Im stilll healing i have numb, puffy, swollen tender areas. I haven't cried alot this month but last week had me thinking about my bc journey and how it's life changing, challenging etc. I shed tears.. it's crazy at times. shedding tears as I type :)
i decided Dbl Mastectomy No reconstruct, due to other health risks with adding materials into an already problem area-i personally didnt want implants, I made my decision quick, but it was very hard on my mental to decide dbl Mastectomy, I knew my life and body image was about to change drastically.
Has anyone named their non-boob(s) after surgery as a way of processing and helping with body image?
