I had a bilateral mastectomy a few weeks ago. All the imaging showed DCIS in situ in on place. So, no lymph nodes were removed. However, when my pathology report was done, I had additional cancer not detected by all the previous test. It was micro invasive. So, back to surgery a week ago to remove one lymph node. Thankfully, no cancer was found.
Well @A MyBCTeam Member @A MyBCTeam Member If this is the new protocol for not having lymph node removal, this is good news. I always believed surgeons overdo it but if they aren't removing anything in the underarm area because of a very early cancer, I would hope treatment would be beneficial to be certain any stray cells that got away or that might be a node will be killed off.
I would have qualified for no lymph node surgery based on my status of 1.5 cm and ultrasound clear. However, they did find cancer in my sentinel node so chemo was recommended as well as lumpectomy and radiation. Glad I had the lymph node checked.

Yes this exactly the study that was used to base decision of no sentinel node biopsied.
