@A MyBCTeam Member: As soon as you feel healed enough to wear it. Also depends on the prosthesis - if you're getting ones that go inside the bra then it would be as soon as you're comfortable wearing a bra. If you're getting adhesive ones that stick right to you, then you want to make sure the incisions are fully healed. 🩷

I had a single mastectomy and had to wait two months to wear a prosthesis. I am (was) large breasted and had excruciating neck pain while I waited. I already had arthritis in my neck, but because my body was unbalanced and out of alignment, I had a lot of pain. On the way home from my getting my prosthesis, I had almost immediate relief! I need to wear my (large) prosthesis every day. If I had needed a double mastectomy, I would go flat at home and wear prostheses when I went out.

I do have an issue with my breast form, though. My chest wall is slightly concave and my prosthesis is concave on the inner side. Consequently, I can fit my hand in between. I feel it doesn't look like my other side. I've tried filling it in, but things shift around. I have to wear it, so I make do.

I'm sure you'll be happy with your results, though.

I am on my 4 th pair of breast prostheses, my initial one was heavy and I received a size to match my remaining breast. After having that breast removed for personal reasons, not medical; I got one to match the other.
When time came to replace the prosthesis, I questioned if I could go with a different size and weight . Yes, I could. I requested a smaller size(2 numbers less) and lighter weight prosthesis. I have been happy with this decision.
I suppose one could go larger if that’s your choice!
Medicare/insurance covers most of the cost to replace these every two years.
