If it had been offered to me, I would have jumped at it, but I don’t think I could have done it. I was always cold during chemo, added to that would have made it.worse.
I work as a nurse in a breast care clinic, so this what I know through work and my patients. The goal is to keep up to 50% of your hair. It can be painful, we have prescribed Tramadol for some of our patients. I am told it feels like a big brain freeze. It is expensive, I think a few thousand dollars. You need to do it from the beginning , and never skip. You cold cap 30” before infusion and 30-90” after depending on the regimen. There are different kinds. We use Paxman. I am told it does not work on tougher regimes like TCHP and AC. I had one patient do Penguin Capping for AC, she kept close to half her hair, and two use it for TCHP, and kept about 75% of their hairs. I have seen patients use Paxman for Taxol and Enhertu and keep most of their hair. I had two patients start Taxotere/Cytoxan the same week. One lost almost all her hair, the other less than 50%.
I am told there is a face book page for cold capping that is informative.
The good news is, your hair will grow back.
Wishing you well on this journey!
I have had 2 Enhertu treatments with the cold cap, and I am very disappointed. The cap wasn't bad, but my hair has been falling out for the past two weeks and I have to order a wig. I am very upset that the cold cap doesn't seem to help.
I'm currently cold-capping with the Paxman version. So far, I've completed 4 rounds of AC and 5 of taxol with only minimal thinning. I almost decided not to use it, since I had less than a 50% chance of keeping half of my hair, and like Laura mentioned, it adds a lot of time to your infusion day. I'm actually really glad that I tried it, even if I end up losing my hair over the next 7 rounds. It's pretty awful for about 10 minutes when you first put it on, but after that, you don't really notice it. Just bundle up:) Compared to the ice mitts and booties I'm now using to prevent neuropathy during taxol, the cap is a breeze! I've been following their recommendations, like using the approved hair care products, only washing hair 2x/week, no heat, no visits to the stylist, silk pillowcase, etc....and for reference, I have fine, straight hair. I was a daily hair washer, so it was a big adjustment at first, especially because I kept waiting for my hair to fall out despite using the cap. I'm glad I decided to try it, even if it just bought me a few extra months of looking and feeling like myself. Good luck with whatever you decide!!
