I am scheduled for a double mastectomy in December or January. I am wondering if I should do reconstructive surgery or just not mess with it. Any advice? What did you do? What did you wish you had done? Thank you!
Hi Tina, this is definitely a You do You situation. I know I am not a very patient patient- lol! And since I was HER2+ I was looking at a year of infusions on a 3-week schedule, already. So, I had the single mastectomy, flat closure no reconstruction. That was December 2018, I finished active treatment in 2020. I have never regretted the decision, just that we ever have to be in the position of making the decision. So, for me it was surgery, chemo, follow-up infusions and done. I have a prosthetic that fits in a bra pocket, so if you saw me out and about, you would never know. I was able to get right back to work and continue my usual activities once healed from the initial surgery- it was the right choice for me and my lifestyle. Go with whatever your gut tells you is right for you! Keeping you in prayers while you navigate through all the info to make your decisions! Hugs!
