Your port is placed under the skin and stays with you until you complete all of chemo. it truly does become your friend and makes things so much easier at infusion time. My cancer center also used my port for the blood draws prior to chemo treatments.

It might be a bit sore for a day or so - again, everyone is a bit different.

Prior to my cancer, the only time I had anything major medically was the birth of my twins. And so , I understand how all the unknown is for you. Please try not to worry. Have confidence in your care team and just trust that with God holding your hand, you are going to completely surprise yourself and handle this all with grace and strength.

I didn't have any bandages on my port incision and the neck incision just Thos red super glue. It holds the incision and starts to break up in a week to 10 days. I ended peeling mine off because it was still on in 10 days and I was going to a wedding and it showed with my dress. Even though the port is under your skin, you will still be able to see and feel it. There is a tiny hold in the middle of the port that they find with a magnet when drawing blood or attaching IV. After every blood draw or chemo your port will have to be flushed out.

They administered thst Twiligjt sleep in an IV before placing the port. I had mine put in ,min the CAth lab with a heart surgeon. They usually hook you up to a EKG during the procedure. So I was awake but could not feel anything. it was weird because I could talk to the nurses and hear everything the doctor was saying. They thread a wire theough your neck into your heart and then thread a tube over it which gets connected to the port. They close the incision with this red glue which peels off in about 10 days. You will be sore for a few days and tender for a few weeks. Your ONC can give you a Rx for a numbing cream to put on the top of the port an hour or so before labs or IV's are inserted. Before chemo I had to have a CT scan, Bone Scan, a second CT scan of my chest and spine and a MUGA scan.

I had my BMX. At my followup appt they set me up with appts with my medical ONC and radiation ONC. They wanted to start in 2 weeks but we had a planed vacation. So They let me go 3 weeks.

Generally, chemo starts a week or so after that visit. Depending on how busy your infusion center is, it takes that time to get scheduled in.
