I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I know this is a tough process. I was diagnosed in May with IDC, stage 1, grade 1. I have had multiple biopsies in the past with precancerous lesions, so I was being followed closely, being scanned, poked, and prodded regularly. I chose to have a double @mastectomy because I wanted to end the cycle I was on, not feel stressed, and move on with my life. (my doctors felt it was the best option as well since I had been seeing them for a few stressful years).

They were unable to find my sentinal node during my surgery so they don't know if there was node involvement. I just starting my hormone treatment and am awaiting my oncodx score.

For me it took me a while to feel good about making the decision to do bilateral @mastectomy, but once I did I felt a sense of relief. Once I am done with my treatment I will be off of this mammogram-biopsy roller coaster...finally!

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago and I am still recovering, but I already feel like this was the best option for me.
However, it is a very personal process and in the end you will know what is right for you. Good luck with everything! I will be thinking about you.

IDC/DCIS Stage 1/HR+/HER2-/Onco 11 Left Breast.

I am 48. I had a bi-lateral with direct to implant recon. I have 4.5 years left of @tamoxifen and so far no really bad side effects. I was high on the ER/PR positive - about 90%. After the @mastectomy, they did pathology on my right breast as well and found some abnormalities that were not necessarily going to become cancer, but I was glad they just took it all.

I will say recovery on the recon was longer than a @lumpectomy or even straight at BMX without recon- out of work for about 6 days and then just sitting at office or sitting at home in the easy chair for a few weeks, being careful. But I would take this process over rads and trying to reconstruct one side and then waiting for the other side to end up with something. Not having the stress of that was worth the recovery for the @mastectomy.

No major complications with the surgery, but I did have to go back in at 6 weeks and have them redo part of my incision that had some minor necrosis. It was not a huge deal - went in at 7am and was working at 11am. Other than that, the new girls take a little getting used to, I apparently don't know how to bowl with them in the way, and it does change your body/shape. Nothing negative, just different.

It is true that lumpectomy and rads have the same statistical rate as BMX - for me it came down to peace of mind and just getting it all out - or as much as can be medically expected - and I did not want the potential long term side effects of rads. My IDC was right over my heart - a little too close for my personal comfort.

Hi there!! I was dx a year ago with 2 tumours in R breast. ... one IDC and one DCIS. I chose to have a bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction with implants .... for the same reason as you're considering. .... I knew I'd be constantly worried about it spreading. I was ER+/PR+, HER -, so super lucky in that regard. Had chemo, declined radiation and started on hormone blocking drug therapy with Letrozole . If able, take your time with your decision(s), I made pros/cons list and went with what I felt was right for me. Good luck and hang in there!! 💜

No problem! I was originally told off the bat that I had early stage 3 invasive. But after all the tests, they determined it was more around stage 2B.

I had stage 1 IDC, dcis and Pagets in the same breast. My oncotype is 21. I had lumpectomy, 4 cycles of taxotere/cytoxan and 33 radiation treatments. I'm 100% estrogen positive and 90% progesterone positive. It all worked well for me and I have no regrets w my treatment choices. There seems to be so many negative side effects and problems w mastectomy and reconstruction. If my cancer comes back, I will tackle the beast head on again.
