I am wondering if anyone would be willing to share their experience with reconstruction on radiated skin. I am finished with chemo and radiation. I was radiated over the expander which I have had for about 10 months. I am trying to decide which options I should go with. I am concerned with the recovery time needed with a diep flap since I have a 6 year old son I need to take care of, but I am worried about an implant. I have read about capsular contraction and women experiencing breast implant… read more

If you still have the expander in after the radiation, I think you will have some good options. If the PS says he can't use that skin, I can tell you that I had a good experience with the latissimus flap. It was about a 3 week recovery as opposed to 6 weeks for the diep flap. There are so many things to consider but that is just one thing I can offer.

I too had a Latissmus flap on the radiated breast.I had the expanders put in when my surgeon removed the breasts.I had the exchange about a year later.I had saline implants put in and have had 2 fat grafting surgeries since. I went with saline because
If the implant leaks out you know right away.I also did not want to have a mri every year.

I had my chest expanders put in last June. I just finished chemo and will start radiation this week. I am worried about the radiated skin, too. My PS told me to call him after radiation and he will examine my skin and go over my options. I think it really depends on how much damage there is to the skin. He already told me that he wouldn't be able to use the original incisions. So I will have 2 more scars,

I had my double mastectomy with direct to implants. Ended up having radiation 9 months later. And I did end up with capsular contracture on the radiated side. So I ended up needing them to be replaced. I made sure to see a great PT for tissue massages after surgery to avoid any issues. It's been 7 months and they're great!

Hello LBZ. I had a double mastectomy with immediate implant reconstruction after chemo because I wanted to opt for the least invasive reconstruction and recover quickly. Unfortunately I developed a nasty infection on the right (the side where my lymph nodes had been removed) and I lost the reconstructed breast. No further surgery was possible until 9 months after radio due to skin and tissue damage. Three and a half weeks ago I finally had surgery to reconstruct my right breast again and opted for an LD flap as I was advised that would be a closer match to the left breast implant reconstruction. I am very pleased with the result, it is much better than the implant and I am recovering well now. It isn't an easy choice to make at all and there are no guarantees. I was unlucky initially but hopefully am finished with surgery now.
Research the options and do what feels right for you, your body and your circumstances. Good luck. X
