I had my first chemo already getting ready for the 2nd on Sept 6th. I know I'm going to loose my hair. I've had long hair all my life now it's shoulder length. I don't know what step to take next should I get a short hair cut or shave. I don't know what direction to go. Need some advice
I had all my close friends and family come for a shaving party. I wanted my hair gone before it fell out. I tried wigs. Ugh! So uncomfortable. I wore pretty scarves every day and a little cap at home. (Winter time and my head would get cold). My treatments are done and I am one year out of treatments. My hair is back. I wear it short. I don't miss my bald head but I can honestly say I miss the time I saved getting ready for work with no hair.
Around the 13th day after my first chemo treatment, my hair started to fall and "pop" out. The seatbelt in the car would pull it out, the pillow would pull it out, the hairbrush, shampooing, etc. All this pulling and "popping" after 3 days left my scalp sore in spots and I felt like I had spiderwebs on me from the falling hair, so...my hubby shaved my head for me and then I shaved his. It's so nice not to have hair with this heat AND my hot flashes. The hot flashes aren't as bad without hair. A shower only takes 3-5 minutes now. I don't have bad hair days anymore. LOL My friend crocheted me a hat with long hair (pink and blue strands) so I can still braid it, have pony tails, french twist, whatever I want when it cools off. Wigs are itchy and hot. I like my bald head! It is an ice breaker when it comes to talking to someone with that "questioning" look in their eyes too! There are freebie sites for cancer patients. Google them for free head wraps, scarves and other items.
I did not shave my hair. I just cut it right below my ears. It lost the vast majority of my hair but I did not go bald during treatment. But I did buy a nice wig. I finally stopped wearing my wig last week, thankful my hair is growing back, short but it is coming back. I say that because I was on Taxotere
@A MyBCTeam Member I found by day 14 of my 1st 21 day cycle TC chemo my hair was coming out in clumps . I asked my husband to shave it. It was a highly emotional experience for us but once I went in shower afterwards there was this sense of empowerment and freedom that I had made the decision about my hair and got I. There before Chemo had taken every follicle. It's weird but there is a great sense of freedom once it's done and yes you may cry and look in the mirror in shock and ask who that person looking back but I remember saying to myself yes I might be bald but I can still put on my makeup and when I had a good day I would look up videos on Google of tips/ tricks for makeup for chemo warriors. I had a selection of soft hats and 1 especially for bed as you may find your temp dropping and feeling cold at night at least I did. My wig was for special occasions and if it was a cold day. Hope this helps. Keep strong! You've got this x
This choice how to handle the inevitable fall is one of few choices that are subjective to YOU. for myself, I chose to not cut it. I'm a stylist by trade and thought my professionalism and the reason I g behind it to buffer me from too much shock. Girl, it WAS shocking. I was surprised how hard it was for me. Still, I had my hair-that is, a wispy tenth of it- through 6 of 8 rounds. I rather liked that I could have an itsy bit of a bob below my hats and scarves. It's not for the faint of heart, doing it this way, but it's a way that can work for some.
