When I had bone scan done after chemo, it showed osteopenia which is can be beginning of osteoporosis. From what I heard about Arimidex one of the main side effects is bone fractures, bone loss, bone pain, amongst other things. Please answer honestly.

I am on Femara and I get a shot of Prolia every 6 months to help with the bone loss.

I've been taking the generic for 4 months, and aside from hot flashes I don't feel much in the way of bone pain. The first six weeks of have a twinge occasionally in my thumb joints, but that's subsided. Maybe my physiology or that I take curcumin/boswellia daily is what has kept me without pain, I can't be sure.
As far as osteopenia/ osteoporosis, it's nearly our destiny when we take AI's. My endo counciled me at length; made it clear that we need to do all we can, but the fact is we can't prevent it. Slow it down as much as possible became our goal.
D3 is important, and lots of it. Best to get your level checked and dose according to any deficit, and check again in 3 months and 6 to make sure you're tracking properly.
My endo stressed that calcium should come from food sources rather than suppliments, as there are some findings in a recent study (2013 NIH) that calcium supps can increase heart event risks.
2000 mgs/day was recommended to slow the tide of osteopenia for me. https://www.iofbonehealth.org/osteoporosis-musc...

I started Arimidex in March and have had some joint pain, especially in my feet, hands and knees. Once I get going, though, it isn't bad. I also take Glucosamine/Chondroitin, although I'm not sure it has helped since I haven't been on it that long. So, not as good as my last med, but nothing too dramatic to report.

@A MyBCTeam Member, I have been on Arimidex for a year and half. last fall (2015) I had bad joint pain. Started taking fish oil supplements (oncologist approved). Joint pain was gone in a couple of days. Have a DEXA scan in January.

I was on Arimidex for a bit over a month. Not a good experience. Made me really I'll and bad hot flashes and extreme bone pain. Ive tried letrozole also. Had all the side effects as on the Arimidex with added numbing and trigger finger in hands. I go back the 23rd. She said we'll try something not sure what. Hopefully better than the two I've already tried. Good luck.
