My oncologist just informed me that she's leaving her practice after 25 years. She told me I was welcome to follow her (however, I would like to stay closer to home). Shortly after I receive a letter in the mail letting me know that her recommendation would be to routinely follow up with my GP and/or GYN for care. I'm only 3 1/2 years out from original dx. Am I crazy to think that it's way too soon to not have an oncologist??? Help, I'm confused and nervous. Thx. Victoria
Here's a page that Outlines follow up plans for BC patients. My take-away, regarding your query, is that for 5 years we will be monitored more closely than a person without a cancer history--after that, yearly, just like any man on the street.
While it indicates that at some point you may want to change from specialist oversite to general, common sense tells me the first five years would best be monitored by a specialist.

I hope this clears things up for you. As usual, you can bet your gut feeling is on point.

Actually my oncologist released me about then and I'm 10 years out this May with no real issues. Don't recommend him to anyone because I don't think it was standard of care and added to my anxiety.
I think recommendations for seeing an oncologist varies. I'm now in the survivorship program at my oncology clinic. I see my MD once a year and a PA once a year.
I'm so glad you are doing well! I believe we deserved better care or at least a routine checkup!!!
Thank you for responding. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated ๐
