I've had decreasing red blood cell counts since I was diagnosed with the DCIS in July 2015. They are at a level now where I am considered anemic; however, my actual iron is not low. Has anyone else had abnormal RBC and what was the cause?

Yes. During chemo not only did my white blood cells drop so did my reds. I was given Procrit. It was either with chemo or injected. I had Neulasta too. I think that was the injection. I was usually on the edge of anemia and being anemic prior to my diagnosis. But since I was stage 4 at diagnosis who knows how long the cancer was there messing with my system. I also had a lesion in my hip. A red blood cell making bone. This may have had something to do with it.

I only ever got low rbc when pregenant and was prescribed folic acid to take. Don't know if you have to take this already but it helps :-)

@A MyBCTeam Member that fear is not irrational and is there for good reason. The reason for you today is to be sure you seek out answers to your health issues to not allow your health to decline. I am praying for good results for you. Please keep me posted.

@A MyBCTeam Member... Thank you for your feedback. My worst fear is that the anemia is caused by an undiagnosed cancer. I've had upper GI issues for years and it just so happened that I had an endoscopy in June 2015 before my mastectomy in August 2015. They dialated my esophagus, discovered a partial hiatal hernia, and after a esophageal manometery test I was diagnosed with esophageal dysmotility. I have an endoscopy scheduled for Wednesday 2/24 to find out of there is a GI bleed.

@A MyBCTeam Member... Thank you also for your response. They did do an iron panel, that's how we know I'm not iron deficient. My red cells are small (not maturing) and light pink (not enough hemoglobin). No problems with the lower (bowels) half, yet! I will be having another full blood work up done at the oncologists office on Monday 2/22. I also have an appt on Tuesday 2/23 for a pap and pelvic to rule out any problems there. I have to admit, the NP at the oncologists office was so thorough and persistent to get to the bottom of this... Not knowing is the hardest.

Good that they sent you to GI. Best to work it up. I hope they did an iron panel ans checked your stool for blood before sending you.
