Before my stage one, HER2+ BC diagnosis, I had fairly painful arthritis in all of my joints. Since starting on aromatase inhibitors, I have been struggling with the level of pain I'm enduring which has ramped up since being on AIs. I started with Arimidex and am now on Aromasin. Been taking Aromasin for a little over a year now. At first it seemed like the joint pain was about "normal" for me but as time has progressed, the pain is worsening. It is something that I wake up with in the morning… read more

I was experiencing the same pain. My doctors convinced me to switch to tamoxifen which is working fine. I go to the gym, I walk, I ski. I tried my best to stay on the AI's but when my Drs saw how I couldn't undress or had problems standing up, they felt I shouldn't have to live like that. They said stats show 1% increase w/ AI's vs tamoxifen. I'm 52 years old. Hope this helps. I've been treated at Sliane, NYC.

I am starting Prolia next month, I was Her2+ stage one as well, now am on ovarian suppression and Letrazole(Femara) I was having really bad joint and bone pain but acupuncture has helped tremendously. I am going for the Prolia though because you can't "gain back" bone density and I am young. Plus new study was just released in Dec that Prolia helps to reduce recurrence in the bones. I will take any extra help I can get in that area!

I am on Arimidex and I do get stiffness and some aching but it's not too bad and doesn't really inhibit me, except that I can't sit down for long periods of time. My oncologist wanted me to go on Prolia due to a not so good bone density scan and like you, I was very conflicted. Another drug with more side effects - and there are quite a few negative comments about it on line. However, I also read threads on Breastcancer.org where others really have few side effects - and a paper was presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in Dec. suggesting that Prolia improves disease free survival for postmenopausal hormone-receptor-positive women who take an AI. So I took the shot - and apart from feeling a little shaky the day after have had no side effects at all:) Good luck with what you decide.
