I did get a wig when I started taking chemo, before I lost my hair. I wanted to best match my existing color. I tried on human hair - which was extremely expensive, however the ones I tried were long and needed to be styled the way I wanted to wear them...mentally, I wasn't up for taking this new hair to my stylist to have it cut. I chose synthetic as I found one similar to my existing hair style. My insurance also reimburses me up to $500 per calendar year for prosthetic purposes - check into your insurance first to see if they'll reimburse. The synthetic wig requires maintenance too. For the weeks I would take chemo, I would just wear hats for the 7-8 days I was home. I would then wear the wig to work for the next two weeks...the heat/friction from your neck will cause the synthetic wig to get matted and tangled at the bottom/back of your neck, so they suggest you have the wig steamed every 6 or so weeks.

I got a good (woven) synthetic wig that looks real. I only wore it to church,
weddings and other special occasions. But I preferred scarves most of the time for comfort. Besides anyone who really counts probably already knows what you're going through and will support what ever you decide to do! I know it doesn't seem like it now, but you'll find that you're just as beautiful bald! Hair is only an accessory!

I also bought a wig before my hair fell out. I hated it an never wore it! The boutique that sold the wigs also sold great scarves, and I found that I loved the Pre-tied scarves the best. They have elastic on the back and feel great. You can also find a great selection on Amazon.

I got a real hair wig and love it. I sometimes forget when I look at myself that it isn't my real hair. I also tried on synthetic wigs and felt like it looked to fake. My insurance did not cover any cost and they are very expensive. I was blessed to receive a grant from Lolly's Locks (lollyslocks.org) they are a wonderful organization that helps provide wigs to people who can afford the cost.

I had a synthetic wig that matched my natural color. Wore itevery day towork- washed it once a week- was a whole lot less hassle than my own hair & I had people ask me who my hairstylist was! Lol- paid about $100 for it- my insurance didn't pay for it.
