Has anyone used chemo caps? Did it work for you? Do you have any advice for getting through it?
@NancyCHM: This theory is not evidence based. Research has found that brain and scalp metastasis is not likely to happen with breast cancer pts especially if it is early stage.
The issue with them is they may keep the chemo from getting to your brain, so you may have a higher chance of brain mets. I personally vote for not having brain mets, so would rather lose the hair!
I met several other ladies who used them and all of them kept their hair too. I didn't realize how much I identified myself with being "healthy" until this diagnosis. I needed to look healthy still for my own mental health. Good luck to you! You can totally get through this. If you need anything reach out :)
@A MyBCTeam Member I used the Penguin Cold Caps through 16 chemo treatments. I lost some of the underneath of my hair (I think I have a big head maybe!), but nobody but me could tell. They were definitely a pain to use, but for me it was good for me emotionally and to feel like I looked "normal" for my son. My Dr. did not feel there was any evidence at all that you could end up with scalp mets from this, and my feeling at the time was if I get scalp mets I've probably got bigger problems going on by then. Everyone has to decide how important it is to them just like so many of the decisions we all face with this! Let me know if you have any questions. I used the coolers and dry ice method too.
Your hospital has yo let you use their freezer space. Some are not very cooperative. They do work though!!
