feeling overwhelmed. Received a lot of info and have some pretty big decisions to make: uni-lateral vs. bi-lateral mastectomy, nipple sparing vs. non-nipple sparing (if even possible), implants vs. flap reconstruction. If I end up having radiation (which at this point I believe I will), this may change things as it will effect how well the skin can take on implants vs. flap.
Any insights you ladies can share would be greatly appreciated.

I had a double nipple sparing mastectomy with expanders put in. Expanders were fine with radiation, and are actually becoming more comfortable over time. Plastic surgeon is recommending waiting on the implant exchange until at least 6 months from date of last radiation so that the skin is optimal. Scar tissue should be stable by then also.
Originally, I wanted a flap reconstruction, but didn't have the tissue to do it easily (we would have had to take tissue from my bum). All that being said, I'm happy with the shape achieved with the expanders, and imagine I'll be at least as happy with the final implants.
And, remember that even if you don't go with a flap right now, you can convert to one in the future.
Looking at my cousin's experience with radiation and reconstruction. I would hold off on the reconstruction until you know whether or not if the radiation damaged your skin. Its a waste of $$ to do the reconstruction after the mastectomy if you do need radiation.
I had bilateral mastectomy with expanders put in at time of surgery. Then had radiation. Not much skin to work with on my tumor side so that implant did not succeed when we went to put the implants in. Now I am left with one implant and nothing on the other side. While having a nice set and a tummy tuck would be lovely after doing a TRAM Flap, I have chosen to go with nothing on the one side. I honestly just feel like enough is enough and I cannot keep going through these surgeries and recoveries. I feel like it is time for me to get on with the business of living. That was my choice but every person has different reasons and options. I know it is overwhelming. Hang in there and take your time deciding.
I had a single mastectomy, lap flat surgery with an expander, chemo, radiation and then a 3 month wait to finish the reconstruction. It's taken a long time but in hindsight I know it was best. Make sure your breast surgeon and PS answer all your questions. If you still are sure about something, ask again.
There is so much information thrown at us and so many big decisions to be made that your feelings are completely normal and understandable. Take a step back and breath. It's a process and takes some time. Consider what you want in the end - to just get it over with, to get your "body" back to the way it was, somewhere in-between? I found this article very useful: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/20/no-eas...
Give yourself the time you need to make a decision and be good to yourself. I wish you peace.
