I am BRCA1 positive. For other carriers out there, I am curious to know: if you could turn back the clock to when you tested positive for BRCA, is there anything that you wish someone would have told you in hindsight?

I tested positive for BRCA2. I can't think of anything I wish I had been told in hindsight, BUT I will say I feel blessed to know I am a carrier so I could take some precautions. I had a double mastectomy in May 2012 even though I could have had a lumpectomy on the cancer side. Last month I had an elective (yet recommended) hysterectomy to prevent Ovarian cancer. My Oncologist who performed the hysterectomy said she found Pre-cancerous cells in BOTH Fallopian tubes. I feel like the test helped educate me and potentially saved my life!

If I knew that I was a Brca1 carrier, I would have gotten a profilactic BMX earlier in life so I wouldn't have to deal with chemo now. I'm getting an oophorectomy after chemo so I don't have to worry about ovarian cancer. Not fun.
