How long is the recovery process (days/weeks?)? How soon do you start feeling normal, e.g. stamina and normal activities without pain? Do you need pain meds and if so, for how long? What physical restrictions do you have? Are your arms "pinned to your sides"? and if so how long? When can you drive? When do you feel like driving? Oh my recovery was soooooooo easy @A MyBCTeam Member. I was driving a couple of days afterward and was lying on my side by the day after or so I believe. You can drive essentially as soon as you are off pain meds (I hate staying on them long so I was off within a day). I had minimal physical restrictions, I couldn't lift anything heavy (obviously) and couldn't do any sort of intense workout (e.g. running) for like 6-8 weeks afterward. However, I was able to go about my life pretty normally. I worked at the restaurant I worked at this summer a week and half after the surgery haha. I couldn't shower the day of the surgery/after the surgery. I am pretty certain I showered the day after. Honestly, the implants will feel so much softer than the tissue expanders, it is going to be a shock for you. My mom was so happy because she actually hug me again haha! It was one of the easiest of all the procedures (at least recovery wise)...I hated the hospital I went to...but that's another story.
It really was pretty easy. I think I took Percocet the first few nights just to help me sleep. You can drive as soon as you are off the narcotics. I wasn't allowed to do anything "crazy" (he mentioned no waterslides) but just one week after my surgery, we moved from NJ to TX. However, I was careful not to do much heavy lifting.
@A MyBCTeam Member my plastic surgeon said I could shower 48 hours after surgery. She said that I could resume normal activities the day after, just no lifting. I am sore/hurting, but the pain meds are helping. I had surgery on Friday and she said I could go back to work on Monday. I can't wait to get the "packing" out of my bra and take a look tomorrow.
I was helping out with a christmas party 4 days after my exchange surgery. I didnt really have limitations other than no heavy lifting. Implant were much more comfortable than the expanders. I was driving within 24 hrs of surgery as i wasnt taking pain meds.
I was kayaking ten days later. Compared to mastectomy it was a breeze!!
