My sister very recently had a mammo which she had to repeat last Friday. She was told that there is something showing up on the mammo, and she had an ultrasound at that visit also but they could not tell her anything more other than to return in 6 months for another mammo. Any ideas as to what this might be or how to proceed from this point? After having BC last year myself, I thought this was a bit unusual. Mine was diagnosed through a mammo, had an ultrasound, biopsy and eventually surgery… read more
My lump was so small that only the radiologist thought it a problem. The surgeon and my Gyn thought it was nothing's but figured a core biopsy couldn't hurt. And it came back as stage 1 cancer. Have her see a second Brest specialist.
I put one answer down but I wanted to add...I really think you need to go back to the surgeon who did the lumpectomy. It is possible that she has an extremely small spot that may not even be large enough to biopsy. it is my personal opinion that she should take someone with her (you or a close friend)so there are two people hearing the doctors words.I was on the MRI table for two and 1/2 hours and then had to come back the next day before they could even biopsy the spot!! I am sure that the doctor has his reason for saying come back in 6 months...but your sister needs reassurance for her anxiety. Theere could be a perfectly good medical reason for his recommendation. Please let me know what happens with your sister. I am concerned about both of you!
Does her doctor know that you had breast cancer? Maybe they would jump on it if they knew BC is in the family.
I would ask for a MRI for peace if mind.
I would hate the waiting. I would ask if the ultrasound showed anything at all. What was the number the radiologist gave. They usually rate the mammos from 1 - 5 for suspicion of cancer. Mine was a 5. I had had several 3s years before that never turned out to be anything. If the ultrasound showed something or the radiologist was suspicious, maybe an MRI would give faster and clearer results??
