I kept my port in for a clinical trial I was in for an extra year, and delayed reconstruction. The advances that have been made in reconstruction medicine, I think, are astounding. Had double reduction, double lift and took my port out on 12/13/12 by a woman plastic surgeon. My breasts are perfect! I don't have to wear a bra. I'm 54.

I waited until my 5 year mark. I am so glad I did it though, I love being whole again.

I've heard of others waiting for reconstruction. I plan to do what you've done, Celeste, because they say that 5 years is the amount of time to really feel that it is unlikely to come back. I believe reconstruction would make it more difficult to detect a new tumor, so I'm holding off. I bet it won't matter at all because you have the same tissue there that you would have sooner after surgery. Best wishes & may God be with you!! :D

I just commented on a similar question. This lady has waited 8 yrs and was wondering if she has waited too long. I am 2 yrs out from my double mastectomy and I was wondering if the wait makes any difference or not. Think I'll Google it.
