Radiation therapy for breast cancer can cause a range of side effects, whether short-term or long-term. Everyone's experience is different, but here's a general overview of what to expect.

Short-term side effects (tend to improve after treatment ends):

- Skin changes like redness, dryness, peeling, blistering, or a sunburned appearance
- Swelling or tenderness in the breast, nipple, or armpit
- Fatigue that doesn't go away with rest
- Enlarged pores in the treated area Long-term side effects (may appear months or even years later):

- Permanent skin darkening or thickening in the treated area
- Increased or decreased sensitivity in the treated breast
- Changes in breast size
- Spider veins (small red or purple blood vessels) on the breast's surface
- Lymphedema (fluid buildup causing swelling)
- Hair loss in the treated area, such as the armpit

Some MyBCTeam members have shared that their radiated breast became permanently darker or smaller over time.

It's always a good idea to talk with your care team about any new or worsening symptoms — they can help you manage side effects and know what to watch for.
