Choosing to go flat after a mastectomy is a completely valid and personal decision β and body image concerns afterward are incredibly common. Many people navigate a mix of emotions, and that's okay.
One MyBCTeam member shared, "I don't regret staying flat. I'm fine with my close friends." Another said, "At home, I go without my prosthetic. But professionally, I feel my clothes look better and I feel better with it. It takes time to rebuild confidence and acceptance."
That last part is worth holding onto β it really does take time. If nipple restoration is something being considered down the road, there are options that don't require committing to surgery right away:
- Prosthetic nipples β Silicone, realistic-looking, and temporary. Can be applied as soon as one month after mastectomy
- 3D nipple tattoo β A flat but realistic-looking option, done by a specialist. Studies show it can improve sexual well-being
- Surgical nipple reconstruction β A permanent option using your own skin, done after reconstruction has healed
There's no rush, and no obligation to choose any of these. For the anxiety and body image side of things, speaking with a therapist who understands breast cancer experiences can make a real difference. A healthcare team can often connect people with the right support resources.
Managing body image concerns is one of the most frequently reported challenges after a mastectomy β so know that these feelings are widely shared, and support is available.
