Breast soreness after radiation is very common, and the timeline can vary from person to person. Most short-term side effects, including soreness and tenderness, tend to improve within 4 to 8 weeks after finishing radiation therapy.
That said, some people experience longer-lasting discomfort. Long-term side effects can show up 6 or more months after treatment ends and may include:
- Skin thickening or shrinkage in the treated area
- Increased or decreased sensitivity in the breast
- Swelling (lymphedema) in the breast, chest, or arm A MyBCTeam member described it well: "You won't feel much of anything at first. Over time, it's like a gradual sunburn." Soreness often builds gradually and may peak near the end of treatment before improving.
If soreness feels severe, isn't improving, or is accompanied by new swelling, redness, or warmth, it's worth reaching out to your care team โ the sooner the better!
