Drains

I’m 8 days post op. My drainage has slowed down a lot and the color is tan/yellow. I just looked at them and one of the drains has a lot of fluid collected and has turned bright red/pink like it was the first day or two after surgery. Should I go to the ER?

This is definitely something to take seriously. A sudden increase in fluid along with a return to bright red or pink coloring after things had been slowing down and turning yellow/tan can be a sign of fresh bleeding at the surgical site — and at 8 days post-op, that's not expected. This is definitely something to take seriously. A sudden increase in fluid along with a return to bright red or pink coloring after things had been slowing down and turning yellow/tan can be a sign of fresh bleeding at the surgical site — and at 8 days post-op, that's not expected. Don't wait on this one. Contact your surgical team or go to the ER right away, especially if you notice any of the following alongside the drain changes:

- Heavy bleeding or clots
- Increasing pain or swelling
- Fever or chills
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- A painful, warm, or swollen leg

Even if it turns out to be nothing serious, your care team would much rather you come in and get checked than wait. Trust your instincts — you were right to pay attention to this change.

I ended up not going. I milked the line and a little bit of tissue came through, then the color returned to normal. I talked to a friend who is a nurse and she said to keep an eye on it. So far there hasn’t been anymore issues. Thank you for checking on me❤️

Maggie,Bright red is cause for concern. Is there an after hours on call for your medical facility. I'd call them or go to emergency. All the best to you.
