How treatable is ER-negative, PR-negative, HER2-positive breast cancer?

HER2-positive breast cancer is highly treatable, even when it's hormone receptor-negative. Treatment options have improved dramatically in recent decades, leading to much better outcomes.

For localized HER2-positive, HR-negative breast cancer, the five-year survival rate is more than 95 percent. This shows how effective current treatments are for this type of breast cancer.

Main treatment approaches include:

* Targeted HER2 therapies like trastuzumab (Herceptin) and pertuzumab (Perjeta)
* Antibody-drug conjugates such as T-DM1 (Kadcyla) and fam-trastuzumab deruxtecan-nxki (Enhertu)
* Chemotherapy, often combined with HER2-targeted drugs
* Surgery to remove cancerous tissue

Since your cancer is hormone receptor-negative, hormone therapy wouldn't be part of your treatment plan. However, the HER2-targeted therapies are very effective at blocking the proteins that help cancer cells grow.

If cancer progresses after initial treatments, there are additional options available, including kinase inhibitors and other protein drugs that block HER2. More than 500 clinical trials are currently testing new treatments for HER2-positive breast cancer, continuing to improve outcomes.
