Bra question. After lumpectomy what type bra is best and will your breast be smaller?

I agree. After my lumpectomy on breast is a little smaller. Soft sports bras for a couple of months then back to regular bras worked for me.

My breast that had the lump is smaller, not that much but a bit smaller than the other one. Not noticeable in clothing. I was told to get a soft bra that opened in the front to wear while healing. Many people find that wearing a supportive sports bra day and night helps reduce movement and pain during early recovery. A MyBCTeam member shared, "I was told to wear a sports bra. You may have to get a bigger size because of swelling."

Avoid underwire bras initially, as they can dig into healing skin. It's best to wait until swelling subsides and your doctor gives approval before returning to underwire styles.

Regarding breast size, changes are normal after a lumpectomy. You might notice:
- Initial firmness or swelling that makes the breast appear larger at first
- Once swelling goes down, the treated breast may look smaller
- Over time, it's common for the treated breast to be smaller than the other

The appearance depends on tumor size, breast shape, and how much tissue was removed. After a lumpectomy, it can take up to six months for firmness and swelling to go down, not counting additional recovery time after radiation therapy.
