Have some women found that all extra funds from outside sources to get through this breast cancer journey have been either stopped or funds pulled back with no help?

Members responded to concerns about losing financial assistance during breast cancer treatment by sharing a comprehensive list of resources, including NBCCEDP for uninsured or low-income women, The Assistance Fund for copay and premium help, pharmaceutical patient assistance programs like Pfizer Oncology and charity programs for expensive medications, and American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery for free transportation to appointments. Several members described practical support they received, such as hospital billing departments waiving copayments based on income, extended stay hotel coverage during radiation, gasoline gift cards for travel, and social workers connecting patients to local programs and support groups. A recurring theme was the compounding financial strain many face beyond medical bills, including housing instability, utilities, food insecurity, and transportation costs, with members emphasizing the importance of cancer navigators, patient advocates, and persistence in applying for multiple assistance programs even when some funding sources are exhausted.

American Cancer Society has other programs available as well so check out their website. They covered 12 days at an Extended Stay America hotel for me last year when I had radiation. Social workers and nurse navigators are also good sources for information. There are also charities out there that assist and sometimes 100% cover the cost of expensive cancer meds. I received charity for Ibrance and have zero copays or costs for this medication. The big drug companies will often have their own programs where you can get your meds for free or reduced costs if you meet their qualifications. My hospital, which is a non-profit and teaching hospital, waives my copayments for me since I am low income and am on Social Security Disability. I live 3 hours away from my hospital and they have a program where they help me out some with gasoline costs by giving me $50 gasoline gift cards a few times a year.

I have received both copay and premium reimbursement from The Assistance Fund (ATF) in the past for a rare disease I have. A lot can depend upon timing of your application, but, definitely give it a try for breast cancer and any other conditions you may have. I will add the website link below:

Hello,
In addition to the sources given, contact your Cancer Institute’s billing department and their assigned Social Worker for assistance. I had great success contacting the Patient Advocate Foundation (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators).

I hope this helps.

Some people are single and on only Medicaid or Medicare and are in a different or dire financial situation.

They may also have no family members who can help.

Sue, I know it’s tough on those with no support system. I would have them to check with their Cancer Institute Social Worker about support groups to join and local transportation service.
